Dan Hawkins, the head football coach at the University of California Davis (UC Davis), announced his resignation on Tuesday after seven seasons. The 63-year-old coach expressed his decision to step down to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family.

Dan Hawkins wraps up his coaching career at UC Davis with a record of 44-31. The 2023 season concluded with a 7-4 mark, securing a tie for fourth place in the Big Sky Conference with a 5-3 record. The team narrowly missed selection for the FCS playoffs.
In his statement, Dan Hawkins mentioned that this move is not a retirement but a transition. He will remain associated with Aggie Athletics as a special assistant. Hawkins expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead Aggie football and emphasized his commitment to continue making a positive difference in the lives of others.
During Dan Hawkins’ tenure, UC Davis achieved notable successes, including winning the “Hawkins Bowl” against Idaho State, coached by Hawkins’ son Cody. The victory marked a rare father-vs-son coaching matchup.
Dan Hawkins, a UC Davis graduate, started his coaching career with the Aggies in 1983 as a freshman coach and later served as the linebacker coach. He returned to UC Davis in 2018 as the inside linebackers coach under Jonathan Smith and eventually took over as the defensive coordinator.
Dan Hawkins xhad coaching stints at various institutions, including Christian Brothers High School, the College of the Siskiyous, Willamette University, Boise State, and the University of Colorado. Notably, he achieved success at Boise State, where his teams went 53-11 in five years.
Rocko DeLuca, UC Davis’s director of athletics, acknowledged Hawkins’ impact on the football program and expressed gratitude for his dedication. Hawkins exits as the third-winningest coach in UC Davis history, with a .587 winning percentage.
The university plans to hold a news conference to introduce the new head coach on Wednesday.
Dan Hawkins is married to Misti Rae Ann Hokanson, and they have four grown children: Ashley, Brittany, Cody, and Drew.
