New head coach Sherrone Moore expressed hope in retaining as much of the championship squad’s staff as possible. However, Harbaugh’s move to the NFL signals a likely exodus of Michigan coaches and staff, presenting a formidable obstacle for Moore in his inaugural year.

Of particular concern for Moore are the departures of defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert. While Herbert’s intentions remain unclear, Minter’s departure is confirmed.

According to reports from The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb, Minter has opted to follow Harbaugh to the NFL and will join the Los Angeles Chargers. This decision aligns with Minter’s background in the NFL, indicating a preference for the professional ranks over collegiate coaching.

Although Moore’s substantial salary of $5.5 million per year could potentially accommodate a max contract offer to retain Minter, the Wolverines must now explore alternative options to fill the defensive coordinator role.

On the other hand, there are no indications that Ben Herbert plans to depart. Herbert’s presence at Moore’s introductory press conference suggests a possibility of him staying on board. This prospect is reinforced by the familial connection, as Herbert’s nephew, incoming linebacker Zach Ludwig, is set to join the team in the upcoming season.

While the departure of Jesse Minter presents a setback for Michigan football, the potential retention of Ben Herbert offers a glimmer of continuity amidst the coaching transition. As Moore navigates the challenges of rebuilding the coaching staff, the Wolverines must remain vigilant in securing talent and maintaining stability within the program.
