Iowa Football’s Coaching Shake-Up: Wallace Ascends, Parker Rewarded, and Copeland Departs
In a noteworthy announcement from the University of Iowa’s Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz, significant coaching changes are set to reshape the landscape of the Hawkeye football program.
Seth Wallace Takes the Helm as Assistant Head Coach
Breaking new ground, Seth Wallace is appointed as the Assistant Head Coach, marking the first instance of such a role under Coach Ferentz’s tenure. Ferentz expresses his confidence in Wallace, acknowledging his exceptional coaching prowess and his pivotal role in player development both on and off the field.
“Seth is an excellent coach and has been an asset to our coaching staff for many years,” Ferentz states. “He works tirelessly to develop our players into outstanding men on and off the field. I am grateful that he is a part of our program.”
In addition to his new role, Wallace will continue to serve as the Assistant Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach. The elevation comes with a significant boost in recognition, as Wallace’s base salary sees a substantial increase from $755,000 to $1,000,000 annually.
“I am appreciative of this new, expanded role and look forward to preparing our athletes for the upcoming season and beyond,” says Wallace. “Being able to coach at the University of Iowa with such great players, coaches, and staff members is really an honor.”
Exciting Additions to Oregon State Football Staff in 2024
Wallace’s Impact on Iowa’s Linebacking Corps
Wallace’s coaching acumen is highlighted by the success of Iowa’s linebacking corps under his leadership. Over the past eight years, five linebackers mentored by Wallace have earned All-America recognition, including standout players like Josey Jewell and Jack Campbell. The recent accolade of Jay Higgins as a first-team All-American in 2023 further underscores Wallace’s influence. His track record includes 11 linebackers achieving all-conference status, with eight players successfully transitioning to the National Football League.
Phil Parker’s Reward: Defensive Coordinator Salary Amendment
In another pivotal move, Coach Ferentz announces a contract amendment for Phil Parker, elevating his base salary as defensive coordinator to $1,900,000 annually. Parker’s exceptional performance is recognized with prestigious awards, including the Broyles Award for the top assistant coach in college football and the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
Parker’s defensive units consistently rank among the nation’s elite. In the 2023 season, the Hawkeyes boasted impressive statistics, ranking in the top five nationally in various defensive categories. The defense’s remarkable streak of allowing 400 yards or fewer in 28 consecutive games stands as the longest active streak nationally.
Farewell to Kelton Copeland
Amidst these positive changes, the announcement also includes the departure of Kelton Copeland, the former wide receivers coach, as his contract has not been renewed. Coach Ferentz expresses appreciation for Copeland’s contributions and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.
The coaching shake-up sets the stage for a new era in Iowa Football, with Wallace’s ascent, Parker’s continued leadership, and the departure of Copeland marking significant developments as the Hawkeyes gear up for the challenges ahead.
