Michigan State Football Secures Another Flip: Andrew Brinson Joins Spartans’ 2024 Class

Michigan State football continues its recruiting success under new head coach Jonathan Smith, securing another commitment from a former Oregon State recruit. Three-star defensive back Andrew Brinson, hailing from Gaither High School in Tampa, Fla., announced his commitment to the Spartans on Sunday evening through social media. This decision comes after an official visit over the weekend and follows Brinson’s previous commitment to Oregon State, which he rescinded after Coach Smith’s appointment as Michigan State’s head coach on Nov. 25.

The Latest Flip Michigan State : Andrew Brinson

Andrew Brinson becomes the latest addition to Coach Smith’s 2024 recruiting class, marking the fourth recruit to make the switch from Oregon State to Michigan State. This trend includes three-star running backs Makhi Frazier and Brandon Tullis, both from Texas, and three-star tight end Wyatt Hook from California—all committing to the Spartans earlier in the week.

Brinson’s Profile

Standing at 6 feet and weighing 175 pounds, Brinson is classified as the No. 91 athlete and the 1,015th player overall in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Boasting about two dozen offers, including notable ones from Wisconsin, Indiana, and Utah, Brinson’s versatility and skill make him a valuable addition to Michigan State’s defensive lineup.

Coach Smith’s Impact

Coach Smith’s influence on Michigan State’s recruiting efforts is evident, with the arrival of key players who previously committed to him at Oregon State. Since taking over the Spartans, Smith has successfully secured commitments from four 2024 recruits, all of whom flipped from their Oregon State pledges.

Rebuilding the 2024 Class

Michigan State faced challenges in the aftermath of former coach Mel Tucker’s departure, resulting in seven players decommitting in September. However, with the addition of Andrew Brinson and other recent commitments, including four-star receiver Nick Marsh, the 2024 class has rebounded and now boasts 11 commits.

Defensive Back Depth

Andrew Brinson joins a talented group of defensive backs committed to Michigan State’s 2024 class. Alongside three-star prospects Jaylen Thompson, Keshawn Williams, and Justin Denson, Brinson adds depth and diversity to the Spartans’ defensive secondary. With a total of four defensive backs committed, the Spartans are building a formidable defense for the future.

Coach Smith’s Oregon State Connections

Coach Smith’s strategic move to bring six assistant coaches, including secondary coach Blue Adams, from Oregon State has played a pivotal role in securing commitments from players like Andrew Brinson. This continuity in coaching staff contributes to the seamless transition and success in recruiting efforts.

As the 2024 class takes shape, Michigan State’s football program, under the guidance of Coach Smith, looks poised for a promising future. The flips from Oregon State recruits highlight the trust and appeal Coach Smith has built, setting the stage for a competitive and talented Spartan roster in the years to come.
