Orioles Acquire Eloy Jimenez from White Sox
The Baltimore Orioles have bolstered their roster by acquiring outfielder Eloy Jimenez from the Chicago White Sox. In exchange, the Orioles sent minor league left-hander Trey McGough to Chicago.
About Eloy Jimenez
Jimenez, 27, has struggled this season, hitting just .240 with five home runs and 16 RBIs. He has been limited to 65 games in 2024 due to adductor and hamstring injuries. This is a stark contrast to his earlier seasons, where he reached double figures in home runs each year.
Originally part of the Chicago Cubs, Jimenez was traded to the White Sox in a notable 2017 deal that saw pitcher Jose Quintana head to the Cubs. Jimenez made an impressive debut in 2019, hitting 31 home runs. However, he has since struggled to stay healthy, never surpassing the 122 games played in his rookie year and failing to hit more than 18 homers in any season since.

Before his MLB debut, Jimenez signed a $43 million, six-year contract with the White Sox. This contract includes a $16.5 million team option for 2025, with a $3 million buyout, and an $18.5 million team option for 2026, also with a $3 million buyout.
The Orioles were active on Tuesday, also acquiring outfielder Austin Slater and minor league infielder Livan Soto along with cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds. Slater had previously been traded from the San Francisco Giants to the Reds on July 7. The Reds received cash or a player to be named in return.
In another deal, Baltimore secured left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies received right-handed pitching prospect Seth Johnson in return. Soto, 29, has a 4.08 ERA and two saves over 35⅓ innings this season. Johnson, 25, has posted a 2.63 ERA in Double-A this year.
These acquisitions highlight the Orioles’ efforts to strengthen their roster as they look to make a push in the second half of the season.
