Southeastern Football Reflects on 2023 Season
A pivotal 14-play drive against Savannah State ended in heartbreak at the one-yard line due to a fumble, epitomizing the fine margins that define sports. An overtime clash with Faulkner added another layer to the narrative of what could have been with a bit of luck.
The 2023 season marked a milestone for Southeastern, as the team navigated its most demanding schedule in the decade-long history of the program. Facing three nationally ranked teams, all of whom advanced to the NAIA Football Championship Series, Southeastern encountered a rigorous road to success.
One standout moment occurred in Week 2, as the Fire returned to face No. 10 Reinhardt University. Overcoming a 17-point second-quarter deficit, Southeastern etched their names in history with a 23-20 victory, displaying resilience and determination. The season witnessed a string of victories, including dominant performances against Warner, Webber, and Thomas.

However, the team faced adversity down the stretch, grappling with challenges from formidable opponents like eventual national champion Keiser, a homecoming loss to Florida Memorial, and a hard-fought battle against No. 17 St. Thomas.
Despite setbacks, the Fire maintained their fighting spirit, exemplified by a 14-0 lead against St. Thomas, showcasing the team’s refusal to yield. The season concluded on a high note with a 24-point win over Ave Maria, marked by Josiah Neos’ impressive 248 rushing yards—a testament to the team’s grit.
Coach Adam Waugh expressed optimism about the team’s development, stating, “I’ve been pleased with the development of our culture and what we’re trying to build as a program. We want to get back to that championship level, and we’re not quite there yet, but I think the kids are really buying into what we’re doing.”
Recognition followed with four players earning All-Sun Conference honors and an impressive 11 receiving Academic All-Sun Conference accolades. Freshman punter Jay Brockhaus stood out as the lone first-team honoree, showcasing exceptional skills in pivotal moments.
Looking ahead, Southeastern is gearing up for spring workouts scheduled to commence at the end of February, with the annual spring showcase set for April 5th. As the team reflects on the highs and lows of the 2023 season, the focus remains on continuous growth and building a championship-worthy culture.
