USC football has bolstered its defensive line with a significant acquisition
Vanderbilt defensive lineman transfer Nate Clifton. The commitment comes after Clifton’s official visit, during which he received an offer from the Trojans earlier in the week. With one year of eligibility remaining, Clifton is set to enroll in January.
This marks USC football second transfer addition, following the inclusion of Michigan State long snapper Hank Pepper. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 280 pounds, Clifton is a coveted four-star prospect in the 247Sports Transfer Portal Rankings, holding the 48th overall transfer position and ranking fifth among defensive linemen. Clifton had multiple suitors, including Washington and Auburn, while drawing interest from Florida State and Notre Dame.
A former three-star offensive tackle prospect, Clifton brings substantial experience to USC’s defensive line, boasting 37 starts over 43 game appearances in the SEC. His notable performance this past fall includes 12 starts, 30 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and a team-high 18 pressures. Pro Football Focus graded Clifton at 67.4 for the season, with an impressive 72.9 run-defense grade. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 93 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks.
In addition to his statistical prowess, Clifton offers versatility to USC football defensive strategies. Under the guidance of new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn, Clifton has showcased adaptability by playing various positions across the defensive line for the Commodores.
Clifton’s own words emphasize his versatility, stating, “Honestly, I play all over.” He elaborates on his role changes over the years, playing defensive end under Coach ‘Nokes’ in 2021 and continuing in the same position in 2022. In the current season, he diversified his role, playing across the defensive line, alternating between three-tech and end positions. Throughout his college career, Clifton has consistently excelled at the 4i position, lining up on the inside shoulder of the tackle.

USC football focus on reinforcing its defensive line is evident, given the departure of five contributors from the previous season. The loss of Jack Sullivan, Kyon Barrs, Solomon Byrd, Tyrone Taleni, and De’jon has prompted USC to actively engage in the transfer market, especially with no high school defensive line prospects currently committed.
Clifton is set to join a defensive line featuring 2022 defensive tackle starter Bear Alexander, USC’s top defensive lineman. The roster also includes the return of former five-star prospect and Texas A&M transfer Anthony Lucas, along with freshman contributor Elijah Hughes.
