Remarkably, the triumph featured several players from the Chicago area who are now on the verge of a national championship. Notably, two of them share a high school alma mater, Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park.

Back in 2018, McCarthy and Tyler Morris, now a standout wide receiver for the University of Michigan, played pivotal roles in guiding Nazareth to a state title as underclassmen. Fast forward five years, and their connection proved crucial against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, culminating in a 38-yard touchdown that played a significant role in the Wolverines’ overtime victory over the Crimson Tide.

Tim Racki, the head coach of Nazareth football, had the privilege of coaching both McCarthy and Morris during their high school years.

Racki, recalling the Rose Bowl triumph, expressed unwavering confidence in his former players. “I just had a feeling that they were going to pull it out,” Racki said. “Here’s my guy, my two guys, playing in the Rose Bowl for Michigan, who I’ve been watching my entire life. It was surreal.”

Racki’s office serves as a testament to past triumphs, adorned with championship hardware and memorabilia. Reflecting on McCarthy’s journey, Racki emphasized the quarterback’s exceptional maturity from the outset, entering high school as an elite college prospect.

“How he handled it from day one, walking into this building was with incredible poise, grace, humility, and that’s who he is to this day,” Racki praised.

McCarthy’s leadership qualities positioned him as the ideal candidate to guide the winningest program in college football history back to the pinnacle.

“In a college career, there’s been nobody better at Michigan than J.J.,” commended University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh.

Now, J.J. McCarthy stands on the brink of delivering the Wolverines their first national title since 1997.

“We can’t do it without the unity that we have. Everything we went through this entire year made us unbreakable, and in the biggest moments, we were going to show up,” McCarthy remarked.

While the celebration from the Rose Bowl win is likely to be short-lived, McCarthy and the Wolverines gear up for a monumental clash against the Washington Huskies in the national championship, set to unfold on Monday night and broadcasted on ESPN.
